You may know Diana Gabaldon from her wildly popular Outlander series, now in its fifth volume. This is a new series, at least according to the cover which proclaims it "the first Lord John Grey novel". If you're hoping for more of the wild adventure and romance of Outlander, you'll be disappointed. Judging by the comments on Amazon, many of Gabaldon's fans didn't like this book much. Hoewever, if you can take it on its own merits Lord John and the Private Matter is a fun read. Lord John Grey is a British army officer posted in 18th century London. He also happens to be gay, although that's not the focus of the book. He gets involved in several intertwining intrigues, one involving his cousin's fiancee's sexual proclivities and another a search for a French spy. This is fun reading, and not nearly as long as Gabaldon's other books.
