This British mystery takes place in 1929, when Britain is still feeling the effects of the first World War. Maisie Dobbs is an intelligent young woman from a working class background. Through fortunate circumstances, she received an excellent education and has set herself up in business as a private investigator. She has an office in London, but spends much of her time out and about, in town and in the provinces. As we get to know Maisie, we learn about her experiences as a nurse during the war and her love affair with a young Army doctor. The plot of the book revolves around disabled war veterans and how they have dealt with their situation.
Maisie is an appealing character with street smarts as well as book learning. She is particularly sensitive to others and has an intuitive understanding of their needs and feelings. Since this book is planned to be the first in a series featuring Miss Dobbs, I look forward to reading more about her.
