This series takes place in India in the early 1920's: the "final days of the Raj". Joe Sandilands is a WWI veteran and a Scotland Yard detective sent to India to train police there. During his visit, he ends up consulting on a number of criminal cases at the request of Sir George Jardine, the governor of Bengal. Each book has a complex plot spiced with the exotic cultures of India. I am not knowledgeable enough to know whether they books are historically accurate as far as life in India goes, but they are certainly fun. I enjoy reading about colonial India and the British, American, and native people there. Sandilands meets new and exciting people in each book, but I'm wondering how long his temporary assignment to India can last. Barbara Cleverly is working on a fourth novel in the series, tentatively titled The Palace Tiger.
