Colorado College has recently begun a conversation about a future library building. A committee of students, faculty, and staff has formed to discuss the "programming" of this theoretical place -- what its uses would be, and what it should look like, feel like, and mean to the campus. If you'd like to see what this Library Program Committee has been up to, take a look at the committee's blog. See especially some photographs of CC's old library, Coburn.
Students on the library programming committee have written a five-minute survey about the current building. CC students, we want your input! The survey consists of a quick bunch of multiple-choice questions and has plenty of space for optional comments. Please help the committee understand what students want and need out of the library, and take the survey now.
I've already taken the survey but some of the questions that were asked, I would like to comment on.
I have a library caroll in the retro-room and I love that room--in the summer. I realize that in the winter or after the time change, I avoid it because it is so dark. I would like to see full spectrum lighting that people use who have Season Affective Depression.
Also, more computer stations that accept portable memory devices in the USB Port so I can write and save my thesis--I'm not even sure they would need to be connected to the internet. The "fake" computers that connect to the internet would be better if they were able to store the "favorites" that I use when I access the internet.
Thanks so much. I love this place!! The people are great! I love library's in general, but this is the best of the best. The Lunch and Learn's are great!
Thanks,
Sue

Dear Susan,
Thank you for your comments. Your observations on lighting in the library have been echoed by many students, staff, and faculty. We will certainly place a high priority on lighting design as we move forward on plans for a new library building. Retrofitting the old Tutt remains a struggle. We continue to try to add task lighting to improve the situation as we can, but I don't know what we can do with the general illumunition system.
Regarding the use of USB storage devices on library computers. We have already raised this problem with information technology services (ITS) as we plan for computer replacements and hope we can find a better replacement for the "thin clients", which is what I think you mean by "fake" computers.
We plan some focus groups on the plans for the future libray and I hope you will participate in one of these.
