LibGuide (and more!) for Ludlow

Tutt librarians and staff have recently started using LibGuides to help our patrons (you!) learn about all kinds of topics.  

This month's featured LibGuide focuses on the 2011 First Year Experience book: David Mason's verse novel Ludlow.  If you're a new Colorado College student or parent, a returning student with fond memories of your own FYE, or someone who's just plain interested in Colorado history, the Ludlow LibGuide is worth checking out!  If you'd rather explore this subject in person, we also have a mini-exhibition of historical materials connected to the Ludlow Massacre in the glass cases by the stairs on the second floor of Tutt North, and a lobby display of related books. And, as always, we invite you to Ask a Librarian to help you find out even more about this fascinating subject.

Best Books of 2010 Display

Want to find a great book (or two or five) to read over the Christmas holidays?  Overwhelmed by the annual plethora of best-of-the-year book lists?  Check out our new Best Of 2010 display in the library lobby.  As displayed books check out, new books will be added, so browse early and browse often.

Max Robillard's jungle in the library

CC student Max Robillard, of CC's Integrative Design Club, created a small jungle at Tutt Library using plants found throughout the building. He tells us:

"I saw it as a simple, easy public space intervention. I just wanted to give people in the library something new, and to offer them a pseudo-shelter, or retreat, from the public space that the library is. My friends and I put it together on Sunday afternoon, and we took it down Monday night."

Wild Colorado book display

Interested in the local wildlife?  We have many books on the flora and fauna of Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, and the Southwest. 

Keep your ears and eyes open as we have great horned owls and red foxes visiting the campus, and many more interesting creatures along the nearby Monument Creek area.  There is a beaver lodge in the pond across the creek from CC campus; if you are there at sundown you may see the adult beavers trundling from the pond to the creek.  Coyotes, mule deer, possums and raccoons can also be seen near the creek, as well as great blue herons and belted kingfishers (and many more birds!)

In the greater Colorado Springs area, there are bobcats, mountain lions, and black bears; white-tailed deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorn and elk; among the many bird species are golden eagles, turkey vultures, red-tailed hawks, common ravens, black-billed magpies, and Western scrub jays.

The Colorado landscape has many native wildflower species.  If you see a beautiful flower that you'd like to identify, swing by the library and check out our guidebooks.

Halloween Reads

 

Books on vampires, ghosts, werewolves, witches, horror stories, "Day of the Dead" and Halloween are on display in the lobby at Tutt Library.  Come check out a scary read!

 

Tempting Reads for Block Break on Display

   

 

 

 

Looking for something to while away those empty block break hours?  Check out the display section, near the east windows in the library lobby.  Currently featured are a selection of One Book, One College reads - books other colleges selected to read together - as well as books by CC's 2010-11 Visiting Writers.  Sandwiched between these two featured collections is the eminently browsable Leisure Reading section.

Summer Displays: Fantasy, Science Fiction, and CC's Contemplation Garden

We've recently put up displays showcasing some great summer reads.  On the left, science fiction and fantasy books, perfect ways to lift yourself out of your hot aestival surroundings and into another world; on the right, landscape architecture books and a set of images of CC's contemplation garden, splendid inspirations for creating your own personal oasis.  We'd love for you to come by and check them out!  (P.S. Tutt Library Haiku Contest Winners & Zine

Once again this year, Tutt staff had a marvelous time reading all the creative and witty haiku submitted to our Annual Library Haiku Contest.  We congratulate CC students Cynthia Whitman, Lauren Jenkins, and Shannon Dunn on their prize-winning haiku!  Everyone is invited to stop by the library in the next few days & pick up a copy of our pocket-sized haiku zine (pictured) featuring contributions by our winners, as well as two more staff favorites by Liz Lewis and Peter Haney.  (If you live outside of Colorado Springs, are reading this from the future, or are otherwise tragically unable to come find your very own copy of the zine, email Marianne and she'll see what she can do.)

Tutt Celebrates Earth Day with New Display

Tutt student employee Justine Carryer created this marvelous poster for our 8th block display, "Environmentalism and the Great Wild."  Peruse the book list here, or stop by the library lobby for the full 3-D experience.  Remember, books on display can be checked out!

National Library Week, April 11th-17th, 2010

 

Tutt Library staff will be thinking about ourselves even more than usual during National Library Week.  Come browse our display of books about books, reading, and libraries, write a haiku for our Library Haiku Contest, chat up your favorite librarian, or just check out Chas' themely apparel.  If you feel like pulling off a library shenanigan or two in honor of the occasion, just remember that no matter how nice it is outside, some people are still trying to study ... and be kind!
